Fairtrade Fortnight 2019

April 3, 2019

Another year has passed and so has another fantastic Fairtrade fortnight!

Fair Trade local groups organized approximately 54 community events, across 15 counties attended by 2750 people. Many schools , churches, AMs and MPs joined in too. We held various bake sales, quiz nights, Fairtrade dinners and even created a giant banana split.

No wonder Wales has the status of being a Fair Trade Nation!

During Fairtrade fortnight, we raised awareness of the importance of buying Fairtrade products to ensure everyone along the supply chain receives a fair price for the work they are doing. During our efforts we were inviting Fairtrade supporters to sign a petition to campaign for a living income to become a reality for cocoa farmers in West Africa. A typical cocoa farmer in Cote d’Ivoire lives on around 74p a day despite £1.86 being the amount a farmer in West Africa needs to earn each day in order to achieve a living income. This means that almost all cocoa farmers in live in poverty. The situation for women is even worse. Women have the responsibility of not only planting, harvesting and transporting the cocoa beans to market but also looking after children, carrying water, collecting wood, cooking and cleaning for the family. This is why the Fair Trade movement were focusing on women during the fortnight this year and raising awareness with many of our #shedeserves campaigns and events.

If you missed out on attending one of our Fairtrade events it’s not too late to help make a difference. You still have time to sign the petition…

Alternatively, if you were not able to attend an event and still would like to know what we got up to then you can also see our highlights here!

We know that if we work together with governments, companies and retailers to make the commitments and policies necessary, then we can make a difference to the farmers and producers of many products that you use every day. This is why your contribution during Fairtrade fortnight is so important to us!

Until next year…
